In short

Counseling Services for Wellbeing offers therapy and counseling in Seattle for adults, teens, children, couples and families, plus psychiatry when medication is part of the picture. You are matched with a therapist who fits what you are working on, seen the same week, in person at three Seattle-area offices or by secure video statewide. We accept most major insurance plans, and you do not need a diagnosis to start.

Where to start

Therapy, counseling or psychiatry. You do not have to know which before you reach out.

The words can be confusing right when you least want a puzzle. Here is the plain version, and either way you land with the right person.

Therapy and counseling are the same work here. A licensed therapist or counselor helps you understand what is going on and move forward. Some plans say counseling, some say therapy, some people search psychotherapy, which is simply the clinical name for that talk-based work. Whichever word brought you here, you will land with a licensed clinician matched to what you are working on.

Psychiatry is the medical side. A psychiatric provider can evaluate whether medication might help and manage it over time. It is never assumed or pushed, and it is a decision you make together. Because our therapy team and our psychiatric team are in one practice, they coordinate when both are part of the work, so you are not stitching your own care together across two offices.

So you do not have to diagnose yourself before you call. Tell us what you are working on and we point you to the right starting place, then match you with someone who fits.

Choosing well

How to choose a therapist or counselor in Seattle.

The hard part is usually not deciding to start. It is finding the right person without a six-week wait. A few things that actually matter, whether you come to us or not.

  • Fit comes before the resume. The relationship between you and your therapist is the single biggest factor in whether therapy helps. A genuine match matters more than the longest list of credentials.
  • The right focus for what you are carrying. Someone who regularly works with your situation, a relationship that keeps snagging, a low patch, a hard season, beats a generalist who covers everything.
  • How they work, matched to the problem. Some approaches suit some struggles. You do not need to learn the names. A good intake matches the approach to you rather than asking you to pick one off a menu.
  • Logistics you will actually keep. An office you can get to, or video that fits your week. Hours that work with your life. Care you can sustain beats the perfect therapist you can never reach.
  • Insurance sorted up front, not a surprise. Confirm your plan is accepted and what your visits will cost before you start, so the first bill is never the shock.
  • A first session you can trust. You are allowed to feel comfortable. If the fit is off after a session or two, it is reasonable to ask for a different therapist, and a good practice will help you switch without making you start over.

We built our intake around exactly this. Tell us what you are working on and we match you with a therapist who fits it, rather than handing you the next open slot.

Getting started

What getting started looks like.

No assessment battery to clear before anyone talks to you. Three steps, and most people are in the same week.

1

Reach out

A short form or a call. We hear what brought you in and what you are working on, whether that is clear or hard to name yet. You do not need a diagnosis or the right words to begin.

2

Get matched

A real person learns what you are working on and pairs you with a therapist who fits it, not whoever is open. If a child, a couple or a psychiatric question is the right starting place, we route you there instead.

3

Start this week

First appointment in person at one of three Seattle-area offices or by secure video anywhere in Washington. Same therapist each session. The early sessions are about understanding what brought you in and where you want to go, at a pace that fits you.

Who we work with

Care matched to who is walking in.

Pick the closest starting place, or just reach out and we will route you. You do not have to get this exactly right.

Adults

Individual therapy and counseling for anxiety, low mood, stress, burnout, grief and life transitions.

Teens & adolescents

A therapist your teen will actually talk to, matched to how they show up.

Children

Real therapy for what your child is facing, matched to how they show up in the world.

Couples

Couples therapy for the cycle that keeps pulling you apart, and the relationship you both want.

Families

When the same conflict keeps cycling, the work is on the whole family, not one person.

Psychiatry & medication

A psychiatric provider with time for your full story when medication may be part of the picture.

Not sure where you fit? Many people reach out about anxiety, depression or trauma. Or just tell us what is going on and we will point you to the right starting place.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before starting therapy or counseling.

What is the difference between therapy and counseling?

For most people they describe the same care. Counselors and therapists at our practice do the same work of helping you understand what is going on and move forward, so do not get hung up on the word. Psychotherapy is just the clinical name for that talk-based work. Whichever term your plan or your search used, you will land with a licensed clinician matched to what you are working on.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You do not need a diagnosis, a crisis or the right words for what you are carrying. Plenty of people start knowing exactly what is wrong, and plenty start knowing only that something is. If you are ready to talk to someone, that is reason enough to reach out.

How do I know which kind of therapist I need?

You do not have to figure that out alone. At intake a real person learns what you are working on and points you to the right starting place, then matches you with a therapist who fits it. Whether that is individual therapy, couples work, care for a child or teen, or a psychiatric evaluation, we route you rather than leaving you to guess.

How soon can I be seen in Seattle?

First appointments are available the same week, not weeks out. Much of the Seattle market books four to six weeks ahead or is cash-pay only, so you do not have to white-knuckle a long wait. We are accepting new clients now, in person at three offices or by secure video statewide.

Do you take my insurance for therapy and counseling?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, among other plans. We recommend confirming your specific benefits with your insurer before your first appointment, so you know what to expect rather than guessing and there are no surprise bills after the first visit.

Can I meet online instead of in person?

Yes. You can meet in person at our Green Lake, Burien or Smokey Point offices, or by secure video anywhere in Washington, with the same therapist either way. You can also switch between in person and video as your life changes, without starting over with someone new.

What if the therapist is not the right fit?

Fit is the single biggest factor in whether therapy helps, and you are allowed to want a good one. If the match feels off after a session or two, it is reasonable to ask for a different therapist, and we will help you switch without starting over from scratch.
