Does this sound familiar?

Something happened, and your child has not been the same since.

Maybe there was an accident, a loss, a scary medical event or something you are still piecing together. Maybe you do not know exactly what happened, only that your child came back from it different. The nightmares started. The clinginess, or the anger, or the sudden refusal to do things that used to be easy. A small body carrying something far too big, and no words yet for any of it.

You have tried to talk to them about it, gently, and it has not gone anywhere. You worry that pushing makes it worse and that not pushing lets it fester. Underneath all of it is the same quiet fear most parents carry here: that this is going to leave a mark, and you do not know how to keep that from happening.

Your child does not have to talk it all out before they are ready, and you do not have to figure out the right thing to say on your own. TF-CBT is built for exactly this: a structured, paced way to help a child work through what happened, with you in the room for it.

What we offer

TF-CBT for kids and teens whose worry, anger or avoidance traces back to something that happened.

After a frightening or painful event

An accident, a loss, a medical scare or something harder. The event is over, but your child is still carrying it.

Nightmares and a body on alert

Trouble sleeping, startling easily, stomachaches or a child who seems braced for the next bad thing.

Anger or meltdowns that feel new

A shorter fuse, bigger outbursts or a child who seems to be holding something they cannot put into words.

Avoiding what reminds them

Steering clear of a place, a person or a topic, with a world that has quietly started to shrink around the reminder.

A teen who has gone quiet

Withdrawal, a flatter mood or a sharper edge after something happened, where the version of your kid you know seems further away.

You want it handled the right way

A structured, gentle approach from someone who works with frightened kids every day, so this does not get pushed down to surface later.

This page is for children and teens. If you are not sure TF-CBT is the right fit, reach out and we will help you land in the right kind of care when you do.

Our approach

How TF-CBT works here.

A structured, paced approach that meets a child where they are developmentally, builds skills before the harder work and keeps parents part of it the whole way through.

1

Reach out

A short form or a call. We hear what happened, what you are seeing at home and at school and what you have already tried. No assessment battery to clear before we talk.

2

Get matched

We pair your child with a therapist trained in TF-CBT who works with frightened kids every day. The early sessions are about safety, rapport and skills, not asking your child to recount the hard part before they are ready.

3

Start this week

First appointment in person at one of three Seattle-area offices or by secure video anywhere in Washington. Your child sees the same therapist each session, the work moves at a pace your child controls and you take part throughout, so trust has a chance to build.

The method

What TF-CBT is, and why it is built for children.

TF-CBT, or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is a structured, present-focused approach for children and teens who have been through something frightening or painful. It helps a young person learn skills to manage hard feelings, understand what happened and tell their story at a pace they control. The National Therapist Certification Program for TF-CBT describes it as an evidence-based treatment developed specifically for children, teens and their caregivers.

Parents are part of the work, which is one of the things that makes TF-CBT a children's approach rather than an adult one. You will not be left in the waiting room wondering what is happening behind the door. Where it fits, our therapists pair the structure of TF-CBT with other approaches on the team, including CBT for the thought patterns underneath, EMDR when a memory needs more direct work and DBT skills for a teen whose feelings get too big to think through. Every therapist works under an AAMFT-approved clinical director, so the care your child gets is supported by senior clinical oversight.

An online platform can be quick to start and easy to message between sessions, and that suits some families. What it rarely offers a frightened child is a trauma-trained therapist who stays the same, real parent involvement and child psychiatry under the same roof if it is ever needed. TF-CBT works best with continuity and a caregiver in the work, which is what we are built for.

TF-CBT is a focused, child-specific approach, so this is a small, vetted bench rather than the whole team. We match your child with a therapist trained in TF-CBT who fits how they show up.

Frequently asked questions

What parents ask before starting TF-CBT.

What is TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)?

TF-CBT is a structured, evidence-based approach built for children and teens who have been through something frightening or painful. It helps a young person make sense of what happened, learn skills to handle the feelings that come with it and tell their story at a pace they control. Parents or caregivers are part of the work throughout, which is one of the things that sets it apart from adult CBT.

What does TF-CBT help children and teens with?

TF-CBT is used with kids and teens after a frightening or painful experience, including an accident, a loss, abuse, a medical event or other distressing events, and the worry, nightmares, anger or avoidance that can follow. It is widely considered a gold-standard approach for childhood trauma. Your child's therapist will tailor it to your child's age and to what your family is actually facing.

Will my child have to relive what happened?

No. TF-CBT is gradual and paced by your child, and the early sessions are about building skills and a sense of safety before any of the harder work begins. Your child is never pushed to share more than they are ready to share, and a good therapist follows your child's lead rather than correcting their story. The goal is to help the experience lose its grip, not to make your child recount it over and over.

How are parents involved in TF-CBT?

Caregiver involvement is built into TF-CBT, which is part of why it is designed for children rather than adults. You will not be left in the waiting room wondering what is happening behind the door. Parents learn what is going on, get coaching on how to support a struggling child at home and take part in the work in a way that fits your child's age and what they are comfortable with.

Do you take my insurance for TF-CBT?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. We will confirm what your child's specific plan covers before the first appointment, so you know what to expect rather than guessing and there are no surprise bills after the first visit. If you are unsure about your coverage, reach out and we will help you check before you book.

How is TF-CBT different from EMDR for kids?

TF-CBT is a structured, skills-based approach with strong parent involvement, working through what happened in stages over a set arc of sessions. EMDR works more directly with how a memory is stored in the brain and body. Both are used for trauma, and the right fit depends on your child's age, comfort and the kind of experience they are carrying. We will help you figure out which makes sense at intake, and both are available on our team.

Can my child be seen online or only in person?

Both. TF-CBT is available in person at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices and by secure video across Washington with online trauma therapy when video is a good fit for your child. Some kids do better from a familiar space at home, and the parent sessions translate well to video. We will talk through which makes the most sense for your child at intake.

Take the next step

Your child does not have to carry what happened alone, and you do not have to find the right words on your own.

Request an appointment today and we will match your child with a therapist trained in TF-CBT, often within the same week. Counseling Services for Wellbeing accepts most major insurance plans, works at a pace your child controls with you involved throughout, in person at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video across Washington.
