In short

Family therapy at Counseling Services for Wellbeing helps Seattle-area households change the conflict patterns that keep repeating, working with the relationships between people rather than naming one person as the problem. We accept most major insurance plans, book same-week appointments and see families at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video statewide.

Does this sound familiar?

The same loop keeps resetting at home.

You can feel it the moment everyone is in the same room. The same fight starts over something small and ends somewhere you have all been before. A teenager who used to talk has gone quiet behind a closed door. Two parents who love their kid cannot agree on how to handle any of it. Everyone is walking on eggshells, managing each other instead of being a family.

Maybe it is a blended family that has not found its rhythm. Maybe it is an adult child and a parent who cannot get through one conversation without it going sideways. Maybe one person's anxiety or depression has quietly pulled the whole house off balance. You have tried talking it out. You have tried giving it space. The pattern keeps resetting.

None of that means anyone in your family is the problem. It usually means the family has gotten stuck in a loop that nobody can break alone. That loop is what family therapy works on. Not who is right this week. The pattern that keeps generating the conflict.

What we offer

Family therapy for households where the same conflict keeps cycling.

Stuck in chronic conflict

The same fight keeps cycling and nobody can break it alone. You want to change the pattern, not just win the next round.

A parent and a child or teen

Working through behavior, school refusal or a wall of silence behind a closed door, where talking it out has stopped working.

A blended or step-family

Still finding its footing and its rhythm, with new roles, old loyalties and a household that has not quite become one yet.

Pushed off balance by a transition

A move, a divorce, a loss or a new baby has shifted the ground under the whole family and the old way of getting along no longer fits.

Adult children and aging parents

Who cannot have the hard conversation without it going sideways, even when everyone wants the same thing underneath.

One person's struggle, pulling everyone in

Where one member's anxiety, depression or behavior has quietly pulled the whole household into its orbit.

We work on the patterns between people, not on naming a problem person. Who sits in the room can change as the work goes on, and that is part of the process, not a sign anything is wrong.

Our approach

How family therapy works here.

We work from a family-systems lens, which simply means we treat the issue as something that lives in the patterns between people rather than inside any one person.

1

Reach out

A short form or a call. We hear what is going on at home, where the conflict keeps cycling and what you have already tried. No assessment battery to clear before we talk.

2

Get matched

We pair your household with a therapist whose approach fits your family and what you are working through, rather than handing you whoever is next on a list. You see the same therapist across your care, so there is continuity and no starting over.

3

Start this week

First appointment in person at one of three Seattle-area offices or by secure video anywhere in Washington. Who comes to each session can shift over time, the whole family, a parent and a child, or the parents alone, decided with your therapist session by session.

The lens

Why a family-systems lens.

A family-systems approach looks at roles, communication and the loops that keep repeating, rather than at a single member who has been cast as the problem. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy describes marriage and family therapists as trained to treat individuals within the context of their relationships and family systems.

Family-systems work for the patterns that keep repeating. Structural family therapy where roles and boundaries need to shift. CBT for concrete communication skills. EMDR or DBT with an individual member when trauma or emotion regulation is part of the picture. Family therapy may help your household change how it handles conflict and find its way back to each other. We are not going to promise to fix your family or guarantee an outcome. We will give you a clear place to start.

We are not the cheapest cash-pay practice in the city and we are not trying to be. We are the option that takes your insurance, gets you in this week, works with the whole family rather than one member, and matches your household with a therapist trained in family-systems work.

Frequently asked questions

What families ask before starting family therapy.

Do you take my insurance for family therapy?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Coverage for family sessions can work differently from coverage for individual therapy depending on your plan, so we will confirm exactly what your plan covers before your first session. You will not be left guessing about cost.

How soon can we be seen?

First appointments are available the same week, so you do not have to sit on a weeks-long waitlist to start working on things at home. Much of the Seattle family-therapy market books four to six weeks out or is cash-pay only. Reach out and we will find the first opening that fits your household.

Who needs to come to family therapy?

It depends, and it can change over time. Sometimes the whole family is in the room, sometimes a parent and a child, sometimes the parents on their own. You decide that together with your therapist, and the whole family does not have to come every single time.

What is the difference between family therapy and couples therapy?

Family therapy works on the whole household and the patterns running through it. Couples therapy works on the two-person relationship between partners. If the work is really about the two of you, the couples therapy page is the better fit, and your therapist can help you sort out which one makes sense.

Do you offer family therapy online or only in person?

Both. You can meet in person at our Green Lake, Burien or Smokey Point offices, or by secure video anywhere in Washington with online family therapy. Family members can join from the same room or from different places, with the same therapist either way.

Can family therapy help with a teenager who has shut down?

Often, yes. When one member of the family has gone quiet, family therapy can help open things back up by working on the patterns around them, not just on the teen. If one-on-one work fits better, we can also point you toward teen therapy, and your therapist will help you decide which starting point makes the most sense.

Where are your offices?

Counseling Services for Wellbeing has three offices: Green Lake in Seattle, Burien and Smokey Point in Arlington, plus secure video sessions for families anywhere in Washington. The Green Lake office serves North Seattle, the Burien office serves South King County and the Smokey Point office serves north Snohomish County. Families can also meet entirely online.

Take the next step

You do not have to keep running the same loop at home.

Start with one conversation, with a therapist who knows how to work with the whole family. Counseling Services for Wellbeing accepts most major insurance plans, books first appointments the same week and matches you with a family therapist experienced in systems work, in person at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video across Washington.
