In short

Couples therapy at Counseling Services for Wellbeing helps Seattle-area partners work through conflict, work through change and reconnect, using the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. We accept most major insurance plans, book same-week appointments and see couples at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video statewide.

The gap between you

You both want more from this.

Maybe the connection has quietly thinned out. The shared moments have gotten shorter. The conversations have gotten more transactional. You both still care about this relationship and you both want it to keep growing, you are just not sure how to get back to where you were, or get to where you actually want to be.

Maybe a life change has put the two of you out of sync. A new baby, a move, a job, a loss. Maybe the same argument keeps coming back and you can feel it eating into the closeness. Maybe you are doing well in most places and want to invest in this relationship the way you invest in everything else that matters.

Couples therapy here is about what the two of you want this relationship to be, not just what is currently in the way.

What we offer

Couples building the relationship they want.

Deepening connection

Couples who are doing well and want to invest in closeness, friendship and intimacy intentionally.

Working through a big life change

A new baby, a move, a career shift, a loss. Couples who want to stay close through what is changing.

Preparing for marriage

Couples who want to learn the skills before they need them and start on solid footing together.

LGBTQ+, polyamorous, non-traditional

Same-sex, ethically non-monogamous and other relationships looking for a therapist who gets it.

Long together, reconnecting

Partners who run the household well and want to find each other again underneath the logistics.

Working through chronic conflict

Partners stuck in the same fight who want to change the pattern underneath it, not just win the round.

Rebuilding trust

Couples working through the aftermath of an affair or another breach, with care and structure.

Couples therapy here is about what you are building, not just what you are managing.

Our approach

How couples therapy works here.

Gottman Method assessment-led work, with Emotionally Focused Therapy available where it fits. Same therapist for both partners across your care.

1

Understand your relationship

The first sessions are an assessment. We map the strengths you already have, the places you want to grow, and the patterns that keep getting in the way. The work starts with what is true now, not a generic worksheet.

2

Strengthen communication and connection

We focus on how you talk to each other day-to-day and in harder moments, how you stay close when life is busy, and how you come back together after conflict. Practical, in-session work on what actually changes things.

3

Deepen intimacy and shared meaning

The later work focuses on friendship, emotional and physical intimacy, and the shared meaning that holds a long relationship together. The relationship you are building, not just the one you are protecting.

The method

Why Gottman?

The Gottman Method is one of the most-studied couples-therapy frameworks. Built on more than four decades of research from Drs. John and Julie Gottman at the Gottman Institute, it starts with a structured assessment and uses targeted work to deepen friendship and intimacy, manage conflict, and build shared meaning together.

Emotionally Focused Therapy, an attachment-based couples approach developed by Dr. Sue Johnson (ICEEFT), is also available on the team when that is the better fit for a couple.

Frequently asked questions

What couples ask before starting.

Do you take my insurance for couples therapy?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Coverage for couples therapy can work differently from coverage for individual therapy depending on your plan, so we will confirm exactly what your plan covers before your first session. You will not be left guessing about cost.

How much does couples therapy cost?

Because we accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna, what you pay depends on your plan rather than a flat cash rate. Much of the Seattle couples market is cash-pay only at $300 or more per session. We will check your coverage and walk you through any expected cost before you start, so there are no surprises.

How soon can we be seen?

First appointments are available the same week, not weeks out. Much of the Seattle couples market books four to six weeks ahead, so you do not have to sit on a long waitlist to start working on your relationship. Reach out and we will find the first opening that fits both of your schedules.

Do you offer Gottman Method couples therapy?

Yes. We have therapists trained in the Gottman Method on the team, including therapists certified at Levels 1 and 2. The Gottman Method is a research-based couples approach from the Gottman Institute. Emotionally Focused Therapy is also available when it fits, and we will match you with the right approach and therapist.

Do you offer couples therapy online or only in person?

Both. You can meet in person at our Green Lake, Burien or Smokey Point offices, or by secure video anywhere in Washington. You and your partner can join from the same room or from two different places, with the same therapist either way.

Is couples therapy only for couples in trouble?

No. Many couples come in because the relationship is good and they want to keep it that way. Some want to deepen connection, build skills before a big transition, or invest in the relationship the way they invest in everything else that matters. You do not need a crisis to benefit from couples therapy.

What if only one of us is sure about starting?

That is normal, and it is workable. Couples often start with one partner more ready than the other, and that gap does not have to stop you. A first session is a low-pressure way for both of you to see what the work actually looks like, ask questions and decide together whether to continue, without committing to anything up front.

Take the next step

Build the relationship you both want.

Whether you are working through conflict or wanting to deepen what you already have, couples therapy here is built around the relationship you want to grow. Most major insurance plans accepted, and most couples are seen the same week.
