Culturally Responsive Therapy · Seattle · Statewide WA Telehealth

Therapy where you do not have to explain your background before you can get to the real work.

So the session can go straight to what brought you in, the family expectations, the code-switching, the racism you are tired of translating, instead of the backstory you usually have to set up first. Care for adults in Seattle and across Washington by secure video.

In short

Culturally responsive therapy at Counseling Services for Wellbeing helps Seattle-area clients get care from clinicians who do multicultural and identity-aware work, so your background is context we work with rather than something you teach us first. We accept most major insurance plans, book first appointments the same week and see clients at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video statewide.

Does this sound familiar?

You spend the hour translating yourself.

You can usually feel it in the first session. The therapist is kind enough, but you spend the hour translating yourself. Explaining your family, your culture, your faith, your immigration story, the expectations you carry, before any of the actual work can start. By the time they understand the basics, the session is over.

Maybe you have had a therapist treat your culture as the problem to be fixed. Or skip past it entirely, as if it were beside the point, when it shapes almost everything you came in to talk about. Maybe the practices that clearly do this work well are all cash-pay or booked out for weeks, so the choice feels like either being understood or being able to afford it.

You should not have to choose. You should be able to walk in and have your background understood as context, so the hour goes to what you actually came for.

What we offer

Culturally responsive therapy for adults and families who want their context held.

BIPOC clients across the metro

You want a therapist who understands racial stress and identity as part of the picture, not a footnote you have to raise yourself.

Immigrants and children of immigrants

Working through acculturation, belonging and the weight of two worlds, with someone who does not need the backstory explained from scratch.

Multicultural and interfaith families

Multiracial families, intercultural couples and households where more than one tradition lives under one roof.

Code-switching fatigue

Tired of shifting how you speak and carry yourself to fit each room, and of carrying that effort home with you.

Intergenerational expectations

Family-of-origin expectations and intergenerational patterns that shape how you live, work and relate.

Everyday concerns, culturally aware

Anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, parenting and life transitions, from clinicians who hold your context the whole way through.

Culturally responsive care is the baseline here, not a niche. Your background is context we work with, not a subject you have to teach us before therapy can begin.

Our approach

How culturally responsive care works here.

Your background is context we work with, not a barrier you have to overcome or a subject you have to teach us from scratch. We do not treat your culture as the problem and we do not skip past it.

1

Reach out

A short form or a call. We hear what is going on, what you are working on, and what you are looking for in a therapist. No assessment battery to clear before we talk.

2

Get matched

We pair you with a clinician who does multicultural and identity-aware work and fits what you came in for, rather than handing you whoever is next on a list. Where you prefer a therapist who shares part of your background or speaks a specific language, we try to account for that in matching. We frame that as a preference we work toward, not a guarantee that any clinician shares your specific identity.

3

Start this week

First appointment in person at one of three Seattle-area offices or by secure video anywhere in Washington. The same therapist works with you across your care, so there is continuity and no starting over. Culturally responsive therapy may help you feel more understood and more able to work on what you came in for.

The method

What culturally responsive means here.

Culturally responsive therapy takes a client's culture, race, ethnicity, language, faith and lived context seriously and weaves them into the work, rather than ignoring them or treating them as the problem. The American Psychological Association frames this as multicultural and culturally responsive practice, an approach grounded in awareness of how culture, identity and systemic factors shape mental health and the therapy relationship.

This is not identity-only counseling. You can get culturally aware care for anxiety, depression, trauma, couples work, family work and psychiatry from clinicians who do this work, using approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR and DBT matched to what you came in for. Your culture does not have to be the topic of every session. It is simply part of how your therapist understands you.

We are not the values-forward boutique practice in the city and we are not trying to be. We are the option that holds your context, takes your insurance, gets you in this week, and can help with whatever you came in for, including coordinating therapy with medication inside one practice.

Frequently asked questions

What clients ask before starting culturally responsive therapy.

Do you offer culturally responsive therapy?

Yes. Our clinicians do multicultural and identity-aware work and treat your background as context, not as the problem. That means you do not have to explain or teach your culture before the real work can start. We will match you with a therapist who does this work and fits what you came in for, whether that is identity itself or something else.

Do you take my insurance?

We accept Kaiser, Premera, Regence, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and Cigna. Much of the culturally focused market in Seattle is cash-pay only, so taking your plan is a real difference. Coverage details can vary by plan, so we will confirm exactly what yours covers before your first session, and you will not be left guessing about cost.

How soon can I be seen?

First appointments are available the same week, not weeks out. Many of the culturally focused practices in Seattle book well ahead, so you do not have to sit on a long waitlist to start. Reach out and we will find the first opening that fits your schedule, in person or by secure video.

Can I be matched with a therapist who understands my background?

We factor cultural background and language into matching wherever we can, and we will do our best to pair you with someone who fits. We frame this as a preference we work toward rather than a promise that a clinician shares your specific race, ethnicity or background. The aim is a therapist who can hold your context, so the work does not stall on translation.

Do any of your clinicians speak languages other than English?

Yes. Several of our clinicians are fluent in more than one language, and we can factor that into matching where it helps. The specific languages available shift as our team does, so the best path is to tell us what you are looking for and we will let you know what we can offer at the time you reach out.

Can I get culturally responsive care for anxiety or depression, not just identity work?

Yes. The full range of care is available from clinicians who hold your context, including anxiety therapy, depression therapy, trauma therapy, couples work, family work and psychiatric medication management. Your culture does not have to be the topic of every session. It is simply part of how your therapist understands you, so you can focus on what brought you in.

Do you offer culturally responsive therapy online or only in person?

Both. You can meet in person at our Green Lake, Burien or Smokey Point offices, or by secure video anywhere in Washington with online therapy in Washington. For clients in parts of the state with few culturally responsive options nearby, video makes this care reachable without a long drive.

Take the next step

You should not have to choose between being understood and being able to afford care.

Start with one conversation, with a therapist who can hold your context. Counseling Services for Wellbeing accepts most major insurance plans, books first appointments the same week, and matches you with a clinician who does multicultural and identity-aware work, in person at our Green Lake, Burien and Smokey Point offices or by secure video across Washington.
